Post-lockdown security tips for homeowners

Chances are that you, like many other homeowners and families across Derby (and the UK!) have been stuck at home throughout lockdown, either working remotely or on furlough leave.

If that’s the case, you could be forgiven for letting a little bit of complacency slip in.

For example, if you haven’t left your home unattended for the past few weeks, you might not have had to use your alarm system or CCTV as much.

And because you’ve always been home, you might not have checked that all your locks are working properly, or even used any additional security measures that you have in place for when you leave your house unattended – such as when you are at work or on holiday.

You may even have done things like leaving your garage, shed or gate unlocked, or left windows open slightly to let some fresh air in.

So, as things get back to normal, it’s always worth double-checking that everything is working as it should, that all your locks are functioning properly and are locked down if you are venturing out, and you’ve had your alarm system tested and serviced to ensure it’s working properly.

While some of these may seem like common sense, after spending so long cooped-up indoors it’s easy to forget these basic security steps.

So, draw yourself up a checklist of all the security measures and locks that you have in your house and before you venture out for the first time, make sure that everything is locked down and working as it should.

Post-lockdown security tips for businesses

If you are a business owner, two things will have probably happened in lockdown.

Either you will have had to lock up your workplace and leave it unattended since the end of March, or, if you have been classified as an essential business, have probably been running a skeleton operation.

Either way, when lockdown loosens and things start getting back to the way they were, there has never been a better time to give your security measures and systems a review.

Again, if you have spent a long time away from the office, it can be easy to forget the basics to keep your premises secure.

On your return to work, especially if your business has been unattended for a few weeks, it’s always worth having a good walk round to check for any damage, any signs of forced entry, or anything that seems untoward or not as it should be.

If you were worried about your existing security measures in lockdown, now may be a good time to review what you already have in place and invest in any additional measures you think you may need to keep your business safe.

And finally, if you have security lighting, access control or alarm systems and CCTV, now would be a good time to get them tested and serviced by your locksmith or security provider to make sure they are still working properly and have no issues which need fixing.

Again, remembering the security basics when you return to work is key, especially if you have many people working on-site.
